Here are the devotionals and FHE for the week of 3/16/2020.

Family Home Evening

Song

God’s Love (Children’s, #97)

Scripture

Jacob 6:4–7

Lesson

    • This week, we will learn a lot about how hard Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ work to bring us to Them and help us get to the Celestial Kingdom.  Why do They do this?  (Because They love us.)
    • In these verses, the word “cleave” means to stick closely to continuously, without wavering or moving away.
    • How does God cleave to us?
    • How can we cleave to God?
    • How can we see God’s arm of mercy extended to us all the time?  Is it still extended when we make mistakes?

Activity

“Heavenly Father Loves Me, and He Has a Plan for Me” read the stories and make snowflakes.  Take turns writing on each person’s snowflake the things you love about them.

Treat

Eat Oreos – show how the frosting makes the two cookies stick to one another.

Scripture of the Week

Work on memorizing this scripture during the week: Jacob 6:7

For behold, after ye have been nourished by the good word of God all the day long, will ye bring forth evil fruit, that ye must be hewn down and cast into the fire?

Devotionals

Remember that these are guidelines for you to use!  Don’t feel as though you have to use every single question, journal entry, or activity.  Make sure you look at the activity in advance so you can gather any materials they may require.

Here is a general outline for each devotional:

  • Start by singing the song together and saying a prayer
  • Read the scripture together, and then have a discussion about it using the questions/comments provided
  • Copy the journal entries into a spiral notebook.  The child or the parent can write the question at the top, then the child can write or draw an answer.
  • Have fun together with the activity!

Modifications for older children:

  • Explore the footnotes for each of the scriptures listed
  • Ask additional discussion questions found in the Personal Study section of Come, Follow Me – For Individuals and Families
  • Instead of printing the journal entry and answering it with a drawing, create a study journal (a simple spiral notebook will work) to answer the question with a few sentences or paragraphs, depending on the child’s age.

Discussion

    • What is an allegory?  Allegories are stories that teach spiritual truths through symbols.
    • Jerusalem has lots of olive trees in vineyard that the master of vineyard makes sure get taken care of.  Wild olives taste gross compared to tame olives.
    • In this allegory, we will learn about how the wild olive trees keep taking over the vineyard, and the Lord keeps trying to replace them with tame olive trees.

Activity

Journal Entry

Draw a picture of the allegory in Jacob 5.  Include the olive trees, both tame and wild, the Lord of the vineyard, and his helpers.

Discussion

    • What do you remember about the allegory we talked about yesterday?
    • Here are some of the symbols in the allegory.  Discuss how each one applies to us.
      • Vineyard = world
      • Lord of the Vineyard = Jesus Christ
      • Helpers = prophets, apostles, and missionaries
      • Tame olive branches = people who make covenants with Christ
      • Wild olive branches = those who don’t make covenants

    • The Lord uses helpers in the vineyard.  These are symbols for prophets, apostles, missionaries, and anyone else who is willing to help spread the gospel to the entire world.

    • We are helpers, but we are also tame branches – we are going to make covenants with Heavenly Father at baptism and in the temple.
    • If we aren’t careful, though, we could become wild and produce bitter fruit.
    • How can we stay tame branches and be nourished by the word of God?

    • Jacob was righteous, and Sherem tried to get him to deny his testimony.
    • What did Jacob do when Sherem attacked his faith?
    • Does this happen to us sometimes?  How should we respond?

What can I do when someone attacks my beliefs?

Sunday

Use Sundays for a time of reflection; share what you discussed that day in each of your classes.  Did you learn anything new or hear a different perspective about what you studied this week?

If you went to a class that did not use the Come, Follow Me Manual, then share what stood out to you the most in your class.

Take a few minutes to talk about what parts of Sacrament Meeting you felt like were meant for you.

Here are some activities that go along with this week’s topic:

    • Look at the diagram for the Allegory of the Vineyard and disucss the history of the the Lord’s covenant people
    • Role-play situations where someone tries to get the children to deny their testimony, and work out how they can respond like Jacob.
    • Watch the Book of Mormon video on the Church’s website about Sherem and Jacob in Jacob 7
    • Talk about missionaries you know and look on a map or globe to see where they have served.  Discuss how the missionaries are helping the Lord with work in the entire vineyard (the entire world).
    • Invite the children to give themselves a hug, or have a big family hug. How do we feel when someone we love gives us a hug? Read Jacob 6:5 to the children, and explain that the phrases “[God] cleaveth unto you” and “his arm of mercy is extended towards you” teach that Heavenly Father loves us and wants us to come back to Him someday.
    • Make a chart on a paper with two columns labeled Heavenly Father and Us. Read together Jacob 6:4–5, and look for phrases that apply to God and apply to us. Record what you discover in the appropriate column. Help them define words they do not understand.
    • Share Elder Allen D. Haynie’s story about getting dirty in a mud pit in his message “Remembering in Whom We Have Trusted” (Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2015, 121–22). What does this story teach us about what we need to do to be saved in the kingdom of God? What else do we learn from Jacob 6:4–5?
    • Work on these fun activities that go with Jacob 5-7 (older children can do these activities instead)

Primary Assignment:

The Come, Follow Me – For Primary manual contains a section in each week’s lesson entitled “Encourage Learning at Home.”  Here is this week’s invitation:

Invite the children to think of a way they can help their families feel the Savior’s love—for example, by explaining what they learned about how the lord of the vineyard cared for his olive trees.
