Lesson

  • Talk about the fortifications that the Nephites made to protect their cities.
  • What role did these have in protecting the Nephites?
  • How can we protect our home from the adversary?
  • Build some forts out of pillow/blankets and with each piece talk about 1 thing you can do to protect your home.

Scripture of the Week for Come Follow Me 8/3

Work on memorizing this scripture during the week:  Alma 46:12

And it came to pass that he rent his coat; and he took a piece thereof, and wrote upon it—In memory of our God, our religion, and freedom, and our peace, our wives, and our children—and he fastened it upon the end of a pole.

Devotionals for Come Follow Me 8/3

Remember that these are guidelines for you to use!  Don’t feel as though you have to use every single question, journal entry, or activity.  Make sure you look at the activity in advance so you can gather any materials they may require.

Here is a general outline for each devotional:

  • Start by singing the song together and saying a prayer
  • Read the scripture together, and then have a discussion about it using the questions/comments provided
  • Copy the journal entries into a spiral notebook.  The child or the parent can write the question at the top, then the child can write or draw an answer.
  • Have fun together with the activity!

Modifications for older children:

  • Explore the footnotes for each of the scriptures listed
  • Ask additional discussion questions found in the Personal Study section of Come, Follow Me – For Individuals and Families
  • Instead of printing the journal entry and answering it with a drawing, create a study journal (a simple spiral notebook will work) to answer the question with a few sentences or paragraphs, depending on the child’s age.

Discussion

  • This week we are going to go over a lot of stories about wars between the Nephites and Lamanites.
  • We know that Mormon said he didn’t have much room in the plates to write, so why do you think he would write so many chapters about wars?
  • It’s true that we have our share of wars in the latter days, but there is value in his words beyond the descriptions of the strategy and tragedy of war.  We are at war against Satan right now in making right or wrong choices.
  • We don’t fight Satan with swords or wear armor.  Instead, we fight with our testimonies.  What are some shields that we have?  (scriptures, prayer, etc.)

  • Read Chapter 31: Captain Moroni Defeats Zerahemna or watch the video on the same link.
  • What was the first thing that Captain Moroni did when he lead the people to war?
  • What does this tell us about our spiritual battles we fight?
  • The Lamanites came to fight because Zerahemna made them angry.  When we get angry, it lets Satan have power over us and we lose control of our choices.
  • What can I do to keep from getting so angry that I lose control?

Alma 47 – read the entire chapter, or summarize it.

Discussion

  • Some of the Lamanites did not want to fight anymore, so they escapted into the mountains and were led by a man named Lehonti.
  • What did Amalickiah do to get Lehonti to come down?  He had him come down a little at a time, then poisoned him a little at a time.
  • Satan knows that most of us aren’t willing to commit big sins or believe big lies. Therefore, he uses subtle lies and temptations to lead us into seemingly small sins—as many as he thinks we will accept. He continues to do this until we have strayed far from the safety of righteous living.
  • Elder Robert D. Hales said, “The traitorous Amalickiah urged Lehonti to ‘come down’ and meet him in the valley. But when Lehonti left the high ground, he was poisoned ‘by degrees’ until he died, and his army fell into Amalickiah’s hands (see Alma 47). By arguments and accusations, some people bait us to leave the high ground. The high ground is where the light is. … It is the safe ground.”
  • How can we make sure we are on the high ground?  (Follow the Holy Ghost)

Activity

Role play some instances where children might little by little go astray, such as playing a video game they aren’t supposed to or taking a small treat after being told no.  Those things are all small, but they start down a bad path.

Alma 50:1-6, Alma 51:1–12

Discussion

  • After Amalickiah becomes king of the Lamanites, he comes into the land of Nephi and the Nephites appear to be surrounded.
  • What does Captain Moroni have the people do?  They come together in the cities and build big defenses.
  • This is similar to when the early Saints and pioneers were told to gather together.
  • What defenses can we build around our homes and families?
  • Captain Moroni ends up taking a lot of land back, but some of the Nephites had become wicked and were trying to overthrow the judge and make a king (so they were called king-men)
  • Captain Moroni has to leave some of the soldiers and the battle to go take care of the king-men and protect the government.
  • What happens when the people are unified in the cities?  What happens when some of them don’t want to work in unity anymore?
  • How does this apply to our families?

The Come, Follow Me – For Primary manual contains a section in each week’s lesson entitled “Encourage Learning at Home.”  Here is this week’s invitation for Come Follow Me 8/3:

Ask each child to name one thing he or she heard or felt today and wants to share with a family member. Encourage them to follow through with their plans.

Sunday Activities for Come Follow Me 8/3

Use Sundays for a time of reflection; share what you discussed that day in each of your classes.  Did you learn anything new or hear a different perspective about what you studied this week?

If you went to a class that did not use the Come, Follow Me Manual, then share what stood out to you the most in your class.

Take a few minutes to talk about what parts of Sacrament Meeting you felt like were meant for you.
