Family Home Evening for Come Follow Me 11/23 for Kids

Song

Seek the Lord Early (Children’s #108)

Scripture

Amos 2:1–16; 4:6–135:4, 14–15

Lesson

  • God chose Abraham’s seed to be His covenant people so that they would “be a blessing” to all people.
  • But instead, by the time of Amos’s ministry, many of the covenant people were oppressing the poor and ignoring the prophets, making their acts of worship empty and meaningless.
  • The nations around them were all wicked, but that was no excuse.
  • God called Amos, a herdsman from Judah, to preach repentance.
  • What do we learn about what God wants from His people in these verses?
  • The Lord sent a lot of judgments and trials upon the people of Israel.
  • What do these verses suggest about what the Lord hoped would happen after each of these experiences?
  • What trials have we gone through recently? How have they given us opportunities to seek after Him?
  • How has the Lord been gracious during our trials?

Activity

Get a picture of the Savior and play hide and seek (or just play hide and seek as a family).

Monday Devotional

Song

We Thank Thee, O God, for a Prophet (Hymns #19)

Scripture

Amos 3:1–87:10–15

Discussion

  • In Amos 3:3–6, the prophet Amos presented several examples of causes and effects: because a lion finds prey, the lion roars; because a baited trap is set for a bird, the bird is ensnared.
  • Amos applied this logic to prophets. What causes a prophet to prophesy?
  • What else do you learn about prophets?
  • Why you are grateful that the Lord still “revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets”today?
  • What does this truth suggest to you about God?

Journal Entry

How can I follow the prophet?

Activity

Learn the names of the prophet and apostles. Make flashcards or matching with their pictures and names.

Tuesday Devotional

Song

The Priesthood Is Restored (Children’s #89)

Scripture

Amos 8:11–12

Discussion

  • Amos prophesied about the Great Apostasy, which is the time after Jesus and the apostles were killed until Joseph Smith was called to be a prophet. The priesthood was removed from the earth, and the truth was lost over the years.
  • We all experience periods of spiritual hunger and thirst, but there is no need for us to “wander from sea to sea.”
  • We know what will satisfy that spiritual hunger, and we have been blessed with the word of the Lord in abundance.
  • Why is a famine a good comparison for living without the word of God?
  • This describes many people in the world. How can we help them find food and drink spiritually?

Journal Entry

Who do I know that is searching for the word of God? How can I give feed them?

Activity

Amos Not a Famine craft

Wednesday Devotional

Song

Family History—I Am Doing It (Children’s #94)

Scripture

Obadiah 1:3-8, 21

Discussion

  • After Amos, God also declared through the prophet Obadiah that although the Kingdom of Judah had been destroyed, the Lord would gather and bless His people again. The people of Edom were included in that.
  • The covenant people had strayed from the Lord, both Amos and Obadiah testified, but they would not be cast off forever.
  • President Gordon B. Hinckley gave one possible interpretation of the phrase “saviours on mount Zion,” connecting the phrase to temple and family history work: “[In the temple] we literally become saviors on Mount Zion. What does this mean? Just as our Redeemer gave His life as a vicarious sacrifice for all men, and in so doing became our Savior, even so we, in a small measure, when we engage in proxy work in the temple, become as saviors to those on the other side who have no means of advancing unless something is done in their behalf by those on earth.”
  • What does this quote mean? What can we do now to help in this work?

Journal Entry

What can I do to prepare to go to the temple?

Activity

Thursday Devotional

Song

Follow the Prophet (Children’s #110) verse 7

Scripture

Jonah 1-2

Discussion

  • Jonah was a prophet. He was called to be a missionary to the city of Ninevah, which was very wicked.
  • How did Jonah react? What happened when he didn’t listen to the Lord’s call?
  • Are there times we don’t listen right away to the Lord? To our parents?
  • How can we apply these verses?

How can I obey right away today?

  • How did Jonah react?
  • How are we sometimes like Jonah?
