Scripture of the Week for Come Follow Me 6/29 for Kids

Work on memorizing this scripture with your children during the week for Come Follow Me 6/29: 1 Kings 19:11-12

And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake:

And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.

Monday Devotional

Song

Teach Me to Walk in the Light (Children’s #177)

Scripture

1 Kings 17:1–16

Discussion

  • After King David and King Solomon, all of the kingdom of Israel was in disarray. 10 of the tribes formed the North Kingdom (Israel), and 2 tribes formed the South (Judah).
  • King Ahab led Israel, and he was wicked. The Lord sent a famine to try to call the people to repentance.
  • At first it might seem hard to understand why the prophet Elijah asked the widow in Zarephath to give him food and water before feeding herself and her starving son.
  • But Elijah’s request could also be seen as a blessing for this small family. They needed the Lord’s blessings, and sacrifice often brings blessings—including the blessing of stronger faith.
  • Put yourself in the widow’s place, and also her son’s place. How would they have felt?
  • How do we feel when we are asked to sacrifice?

Journal Entry

How can I follow the widow’s example?

Activity

Elijah and widow pinwheel craft

Tuesday Devotional

Song

Families Can Be Together Forever (Children’s #188)

Scripture

1 Kings 17:17-24

Discussion

  • After the widow helped Elijah, her son became sick and died.
  • What did the widow do? What did Elijah do?
  • The woman had great faith to ask Elijah for help again. She could have become angry that something bad had happened to her son after she helped the prophet, but she didn’t.
  • Our loved ones may not come back to life immediately, but because of Jesus Christ, we will all be resurrected.
  • Sometimes bad things happen to good people. They won’t all be fixed in this life, but we can trust that God loves us and feels compassion for us.

Journal Entry

How can I have faith when things seem difficult?

Activity

Elijah and the Widow worksheet

Wednesday Devotional

Song

Nephi’s Courage (Children’s #120) verse 3

Scripture

1 Kings 18:16-46

Discussion

  • The entire land was in a drought and famine as punishment for wickedness.
  • King Ahab and Queen Jezebel told the people to worship Baal, the false god of storms and rain.
  • It made sense for the people to do it, because everyone else was doing it and the king and queen did it, too.
  • What happened to the priests of Baal when they tried to prove Baal was just as powerful as God?
  • Do you ever feel like you should do something because others are doing it, even when you think it might be wrong?
  • What can you learn about Elijah’s faith from these verses?

Journal Entry

How can I choose the right when others are choosing wrong?

Activity

Thursday Devotional

Song

The Still Small Voice (Children’s #106)

Scripture

1 Kings 19:1–18

Discussion

  • When Queen Jezebel heard about what had happened to her priests on Mount Carmel, she wasn’t converted—she was enraged.
  • Elijah knew she would kill him, so he fled to a cave for safety.
  • He was lonely and a bit discouraged, but he had an incredible encounter with the Lord.
  • How did the Lord communicate with Elijah?
  • What do we learn about how the Lord communicates with us when things are difficult?

Journal Entry

How do I feel the Holy Ghost?

Activity

  • What impresses you about Elisha in these verses?
