The Books in the Old Testament (Children’s #114)
Scripture
Discussion
- The Old Testament is one of the oldest collections of writings in the world, and this can make it both exciting and intimidating.
- These writings come from an ancient culture that can seem foreign and sometimes strange or even uncomfortable.
- And yet in these writings we see people having experiences that seem familiar.
- Yes, people like Abraham, Sarah, Hannah, and Daniel lived lives that, in some ways, were very different from ours. But they also experienced family joy and family discord, moments of faith and moments of uncertainty, and successes and failures—like all of us do.
- As we learn how God moved in their lives, we also see Him in ours, and we say with the psalmist: “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. … Therefore thy servant loveth it”
Journal Entry
How is my life similar to people who lived in Old Testament times?
Activity

Tuesday Devotional
Song
Bread of Life, Living Water (Hymns — For Home and Church #1008)
Scripture
Discussion
- One common symbol in the Old Testament is Jesus Christ as the Bread of Life.
- In one story in the Old Testament, the people are hungry. The Lord told the prophet Moses that He would send manna (a special type of bread) and quail (birds) from Heaven to feed them.
- What does this tell you about Jesus? (He provides for his people, we should rely on Him for all things.)
- When we take the sacrament, the bread can help us remember that Jesus is the Bread of Life.
Journal Entry
How does Jesus feed me spiritual bread?
Activity

Wednesday Devotional
Song
Standing on the Promises (Hymns-For Home and Church #1023)
Scripture
Discussion
- In the Old Testament, we will read a lot of words spoken by “Jehovah,” “Lord,” or even “God.”
- President Dallin H. Oaks said that, “We conclude that the scriptural records of words spoken by ‘God’ or the ‘Lord’ are almost always the words of Jehovah, our risen Lord, Jesus Christ.”
- When Jesus came to earth, He told the Pharisees, “Before Abraham was, I am.” He was telling them that He was the God who spoke to their ancestors, which made them angry.
- Why is it important that we know that Jesus Christ is the God of the Old Testament?
- What are ome statements that identify who you are? (Affirmations)
Journal Entry
Make a list of “I Am” statements about yourself.
Activity
Thursday Devotional
Song
The Eighth Article of Faith (Children’s #127)
Scripture
1 Nephi 13:21–29, 38–42; 2 Nephi 3:12
Discussion
- The writings of the Old Testament are from the prophets a long, long time ago. These people are the ancestors of both the Nephites and the Jews in Jerusalem.
- Over time, the writings in the Bible became changed, due to translations or people changing them on purpose.
- A lot of the truths that were lost had to be restred through Joseph Smith.
- The Book of Mormon, the books of Moses and Abraham, and the Joseph Smith Translation all help show the truth.
- They include stories about Enoch’s city of Zion, Abraham’s vision of the pre-earth life, the Garden of Eden, the prophet Melchizedek, and more.
- Why is it important for the truth to be restored?
Journal Entry
How are the stories restored by Joseph Smith “plan and precious” to me?
Activity

Friday Devotional
Song
My Covenant Path (Friend magazine).
Scripture
Discussion
- The Old Testament is the story of God seeking to make us His “peculiar treasure” by covenant.
- A good way to prepare to read the Old Testament is by learning about covenants.
- Why are covenants important? How does God give us special love and mercy when we keep our covenants?

These daily devotionals look so great! I am wondering, if there is a way to get a printed version for the whole year?
Hi! So glad you like them! We don’t do a printed version, unfortunately. When we first began doing these the first year of CFM, we had PDFs available. Unfortunately, people began to download them and re-share them as their own. We even found a few people trying to sell them. This format is the best way we have to prevent others’ dishonesty. As it is, we’ve seen people try to pass the handwriting pages around on Facebook and other places without giving proper credit. 🙁
