Monday Devotional

Song

I Want to Be a Missionary Now (Children’s #168)

Scripture

Alma 8:9-21

Discussion

  • Last week we learned that Alma was going to different cities to preach.  He came to Ammonihah, which was very wicked.  They threw him out of the city and he started to move on to another one.
  • An angel came and told him to go back.  He did and met a man named Amulek, who had been told by an angel that Alma was a prophet and he should help him.
  • The people didn’t listen at first; that happens sometimes with us, too.  We may share the gospel with people who don’t want it.  That doesn’t mean you give up on them, though.  What are ways we can keep sharing with people who don’t want it?
  • What made Alma and Amulek good missionaries? What made them good friends?
  • Watch “Alma Is Commanded by an Angel to Return to Ammonihah”

Journal Entry

What can I do if someone I share the gospel with doesn’t want it?

Tuesday Devotional

Song

Have I Done Any Good? (Hymns #223)

Scripture

Alma 9:14–23

Discussion

  • When Alma and Amulek started teaching the people, a man named Zeezrom tried to argue with them and trick them into saying the wrong thing.
  • The Spirit was with them and told them what to say.  The verses we read are some of those things.
  • One big thing they taught was the people of Ammonihah had once been righteous and had the gospel, but they turned away and became hard-hearted.   The Lord had given them great blessings, but that made them prideful.
  • What great blessings has God given us? What responsibilities come with those blessings?

What can I do to stay true to my responsibilities?

Wednesday Devotional

Song

I Will Follow God’s Plan (Children’s #164)

Scripture

Alma 11:37-45

Discussion

  • Alma and Amulek continue teaching Zeezrom.  They focus a lot on the Plan of Salvation. or as they called it, the Plan of Redemption.
  • What does “redemption” mean?  (serving to offset or compensate for a defect, according to Merriam Webster)Adam and Eve ate the fruit, and our bodies can now get sick and die. And we also sin.
  • They tell Zeezrom that no unclean thing can enter into heaven, so Jesus needs to come down and suffer for our sins.  We will then all be resurrected and judged by Heavenly Father and Jesus.
  • Jesus makes up for the imperfections in our bodies and spirits.
  • Your hand could represent your spirit, and a glove could represent your body. Take your hand out of the glove to show that our spirits and bodies will be separated at death. Then place your hand back in the glove to show that our spirits and bodies will be joined together again at the Resurrection.
  • How does this apply to each of us?  What is the best thing about this part of the plan?

Thursday Devotional

Song

I Lived in Heaven (Children’s #4)

Scripture

Alma 12:22-34

Discussion

  • Alma and Amulek continue teaching Zeezrom about the Plan of Redemption, only now they talk about the Fall of Adam and Eve.
  • The Fall was a good thing – it started the Plan of Salvation.  Adam and Eve were taught by angels about the commandments and how to return to Heavenly Father
  • What do we need to do to return to Heavenly Father?  How is it possible to repent?
  • Watch “Amulek Testifies of Jesus Christ”

Friday Devotional

Song

Teach Me to Walk in the Light (Children’s #177)

Scripture

Alma 10:1–11; 12:8–18

Discussion

  • Heavenly Father and Jesus don’t tell us everything.  What is the reason for this that Alma and Amulek give in the verses?
  • What does it mean to “harden our hearts”? (We talked about this a lot last week.)
  • Compare learning the gospel to learning math in school or a baby learning to crawl, then walk, then run.  It’s a process; you have to learn the first parts before you can learn the second parts.
  • What was the difference between Zeezrom and Amulek when they first heard about the gospel?
  • Watch “Alma Warns Zeezrom

Journal Entry

What can I do today to make sure God’s word is found in me?

  • Talk about the difference between a hard heart and a soft heart. Use a sponge and a rock and ask which will absorb water better. How can we show the Lord that we want our hearts to be soft like the sponge?
  • Free printable coloring page Alma and Amulek
  • Do this visual aid to show just how much Zeezrom’s bribe to get Amulek to lie would be.
