Family Home Evening for Come Follow Me 9/15 for Kids

Song

Lead, Kindly Light (Hymns #97)

Scripture

Doctrine and Covenants 103:12, 36

Lesson

  • Talk about Zion’s Camp. You may want to read Voices of the Restoration or Saints, 1:194–206; “The Acceptable Offering of Zion’s Camp,” in Revelations in Context, 213–18..
  • Joseph Smith and the other leaders thought that they were going to liberate the Saints by force. This didn’t happen, but they saw the power of God and went through many experiences that shaped them into leaders of the church.
  • Sometimes things don’t go as we expect. And that is OK.
  • God teaches us through our experiences. When has our family not had something go as planned? What did we learn from it?

Activity

Play a chance based game together (most card or dice games)

Treat

“Marshmallow Covered Wagon”

Monday Devotional

Song

Pioneer Children Were Quick to Obey (Children’s #215)

Scripture

Doctrine and Covenants 102:12–23

Discussion

  • This section contains the minutes of the first high council of the Church.
  • Sometimes people commit big sins and the High Council meets to decide if those people can still have blessings, like holding the Priesthood, taking the sacrament, or even being able to stay a member of the Church.
  • These verses give direction on how the high councils should handle these big sins.
  • President M. Russell Ballard taught, “Members sometimes ask why Church [membership] councils are held. The purpose is threefold: to save the soul of the transgressor, to protect the innocent, and to safeguard the Church’s purity, integrity, and good name.”
  • Usually, we don’t commit big sins unless we are already committing little sins. (We won’t go steal something if we aren’t already telling lies, for example)
  • How we can keep ourselves from committing big sins?

Journal Entry

How can I be more obedient in little sins today?

Activity

Listening ears craft

Tuesday Devotional

Song

Behold! A Royal Army (Hymns #251)

Scripture

Voices of the Restoration: Zion’s Camp (summarize if already done for FHE)
Doctrine and Covenants 104:42

Discussion

  • Last week we learned how the Saints in Jackson County, Missouri were being driven from their homes.
  • 200 men in Kirtland signed up to be part Zion’s Camp, and they planned to go to Jackson County and force the mobs to give the Saints back their homes and properties.
  • But just before the camp arrived in Jackson County, the Lord told Joseph Smith to stop and disband Zion’s Camp.
  • (Now read some of the quotes in the Voices of the Restoration: Zion’s Camp)
  • What do these attitudes tell us about how we should handle things when the Lord tells us something we don’t expect?

Journal Entry

What blessings have I received from the Lord for my obedience?

Activity

Wednesday Devotional

Song

Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam (Children’s #60)

Scripture

Doctrine and Covenants 103:1–13, 36

Discussion

  • In many ways, participating in Zion’s Camp was a trial of faith.
  • The journey was long, the weather was hot, and food and water were sometimes scarce.
  • And after all they endured, the Saints were still not able to return to their land.
  • Some people worried that Joseph Smith wasn’t a prophet because they felt Zion’s Camp had failed. The Lord gave these verses of encouragement to them.
  • How can these verses help you in your own trials of faith?
  • How can we be like a light to others when we follow Jesus Christ? (verse 9)

Journal Entry

What should I do when I am confused by a direction from the Lord?

I Want to Give the Lord My Tenth (Children’s #150b)

Scripture

Doctrine and Covenants 104:11–18, 78–83

Discussion

  • In addition to trials in Missouri, in 1834 the Church faced financial difficulties, including heavy debts and expenses.
  • These verses tell us what the Lord has to say about the Church’s financial situation. What does He tell them?
  • Who is the true owner of all things? What does He want us to do with these things?
  • What can we learn about how we should handle our own money and possessions?

Journal Entry

Scripture

Discussion

  • Why did the Saints lose their promised land in Missouri?
  • And why didn’t the Lord allow Zion’s Camp to restore them to their lands?
  • Sometimes we let things keep us from building Zion today.
  • What do we learn in these verses that can help us establish Zion in our hearts and homes?
