Monday Devotional

Song

Where Can I Turn for Peace? (Hymns #129)

Scripture

Doctrine and Covenants 121:1-6

Discussion

  • The peace and optimism of Far West had lasted only a few months, and now the Saints were homeless once again.
  • Joseph Smith was in prison in Liberty Jail for several months. The bottom level of the county jail in Liberty, Missouri, was known as the dungeon. The walls were thick, the stone floor was cold and filthy, the food—what there was of it—was rotten, and the only light came from two narrow, iron-barred windows near the ceiling.
  • This dungeon is where Joseph Smith and a few of his brethren spent most of their imprisonment—four frigid months during the winter of 1838–39—awaiting trial for charges of treason against the state of Missouri.
  • The verses we read are his prayer to the Lord.
  • What can we learn from Joseph’s experiences about how we should approach difficult trials?

Journal Entry

What should I do when I feel hopeless and in despair?

Activity

  • What do we learn about God and His love and power from these verses?
  • How does God want us to handle adversities? How can this be applied to something we are going through right now?

Journal Entry

How does the Lord want me to view my trials?

God’s eye craft

Wednesday Devotional

Song

I’ll Walk with You (Children’s #140)

Scripture

Doctrine and Covenants 121:34–46

Discussion

  • How is God’s power different from worldly power?
  • What do we learn about God’s power (the priesthood) in these verses?
  • Compare God’s power to electrical power. What prevents an electrical device from receiving power? Similarly, what decreases or increases our spiritual power?
  • How should righteous priesthood holders behave?
  • (Parents, at this time, based on the age and gender of the children, discuss the difference between righteous priesthood leadership and unrighteous dominion.)

Journal Entry

How can I influence other people the way God does?

Activity

Make a God Is craft, but instead use it for the characteristics of the priesthood.

God’s Love (Children’s #97)

  • Towards the end of his imprisonment, the Saints must have felt powerless and helpless, like there was nothing they could do about their situation.

  • Who do you know who is kept from the truth? How can you help them find it?
