Monday Devotional

Song

“Search, Ponder, and Pray” (Children’s #109)

Scripture

Watch Video: Doctrine and Covenants Stories, “Chapter 5: Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery (February–April 1829)”

Discussion

  • Show the Gospel Art Picture: “Joseph Smith Translating the Book of Mormon”
  • In the fall of 1828, a young schoolteacher named Oliver Cowdery took a teaching job in Manchester, New York, and stayed with the family of Lucy and Joseph Smith Sr.
  • He heard about Joseph Smith and wanted to learn about him and the Book of Mormon. He prayed about it and received revelation that it was true.
  • Oliver eventually took over helping translate the plates after Martin Harris lost the 116 pages.

Journal Entry

How can I know the Joseph Smith story is true?

Activity

“Who Am I? (A Church History Mystery)”

Tuesday Devotional

Song

Prayer Is the Soul’s Sincere Desire (Hymns #145)

Scripture

Doctrine and Covenants 6:1-17

Discussion

  • Oliver Cowdrey wanted to translate like Joseph Smith did. Joseph asked the Lord in prayer, and section 6 was the answer to that prayer.
  • What does the Lord tell Oliver about desires? Does this apply to our desires?

Journal Entry

What things do I desire?

Activity

Translate the secret messages

Wednesday Devotional

Song

“The Holy Ghost” (Children’s #105)

Scripture

D&C 9:3, 7–14

Discussion

  • The answer for Oliver Cowdrey was that he would not be allowed to translate.
  • Yesterday we talked about how the first revelation discussed desires. What else does the Lord say about desires in this section?
  • We may desire something, but if we are afraid, it will block our ability to get our righteous desires.

Thursday Devotional

Song

“The Still Small Voice” (Children’s #106)

Scripture

Doctrine & Covenants 8

Discussion

  • Part of the reason Oliver was not able to translate was because he wasn’t used to receiving revelation through the Spirit.
  • What do we learn in these verses about revelations from Heavenly Father?
  • How can we receive revelation and know that’s what we’re feeling?

Journal Entry

When I have felt the Spirit in the past? How did He feel?

Activity

Coloring page: “I choose to fill my life with things that invite the Spirit” (August 2012 Friend)

Friday Devotional

Song

“Come, Come, Ye Saints” (Hymns #30)

Scripture

Doctrine and Covenants 6:18–21, 29–37

Discussion

  • Even though Joseph had already experienced “difficult circumstances” while doing the Lord’s work (Doctrine and Covenants 6:18), he and Oliver likely had no idea how difficult those circumstances would become over the next several years.
  • But the Lord knew, and He knows what trials are in your future too. These verses were for Joseph and Oliver, and they are for us, too.
  • How might Joseph and Oliver have felt after hearing these words? What do you find in these verses that helps you trust the Lord?
  • What does it mean to “look unto [Christ] in every thought”?

Journal Entry

How can I look unto Christ more in my life?

  1. I am a primary teacher that is still not able to teach in person. I come to your website for activity pages. I then make up a package and drop off to my primary kids once a month as a review of what they have studied that month at home. I include things I pick up at great sales like a pack of markers one month a pair of scissors the next…I have been blessed to hit great sales 🙂 We have new families that have come to our ward during covid. This way they get to know me and I get to know them! Your website has helped me immensely and I enjoy reading about you and your dear family. Keep up the great work for it is appreciated!!
