Monday Devotional

Song

To Think about Jesus (Children’s #71)

Scripture

Doctrine and Covenants 27:1–4

Discussion

  • Sally Knight and Emma Smith were baptized in June 1830, but their confirmations were disrupted by a mob.
  • Two months later, Sally and her husband, Newel, came to visit Emma and Joseph, and it was decided that the confirmations should now be performed and that the group would partake of the sacrament together.
  • While on his way to get supplies for the sacrament, Joseph was stopped by an angel. What did the angel teach him about the sacrament? What does it mean to have an “eye single to His glory”?
  • How does the Savior want you to approach the sacrament? What do you feel inspired to do because of what you are learning?

Journal Entry

What can I do to focus on the Savior during the sacrament?

Activity

Tuesday Devotional

Song

In Remembrance of Thy Suffering (Hymns #183)

Scripture

Doctrine and Covenants 27:5-14

Discussion

  • What do we learn about the Priesthood in these verses?
  • The same Priesthood used to bless the sacrament today is the same Priesthood all of the ancient prophets had.
  • Each prophet was in charge of something different. Joseph Smith was visited by each of those prophets and they laid their hands on his head to give him the Priesthood authority to fulfill those responsibilities today.
  • The prophet and the 12 apostles have that same authority.

Journal Entry

What can I do to be worthy of Priesthood blessings?

Activity

Wednesday Devotional

Song

We Are Marching On to Glory (Hymns #225)

Scripture

Doctrine and Covenants 27:15–18

Discussion

  • President M. Russell Ballard said: “There is not one great and grand thing we can do to arm ourselves spiritually. True spiritual power lies in numerous smaller acts woven together in a fabric of spiritual fortification that protects and shields from all evil” (“Be Strong in the Lord,” Ensign, July 2004, 8).
  • When knights used to go into battle, they would put on metal armor to protect themselves. We can protect our spirits from Satan by putting on spiritual armor.
  • What is the spiritual armor in each of these verses?

Journal Entry

Draw a picture of the armor of God and write what each piece stands for.

  • Imagine what it would be like if anyone could receive commandments and revelation for the entire Church.
  • When Hiram Page claimed to have received such revelation, there was confusion among Church members.

Friday Devotional

Song

We’ll Bring the World His Truth (Children’s #172)

Scripture

Doctrine and Covenants 28:8-9

Discussion

  • One purpose of the Book of Mormon is “that the Lamanites might come to the knowledge of their fathers, and that they might know the promises of the Lord” (Doctrine and Covenants 3:20).
  • Early Church members considered the American Indians to be descendants of the Book of Mormon people. (The official position of the Church today is that the Lamanites “are among the ancestors of the American Indians” [introduction to the Book of Mormon].)
  • Oliver Cowdrey was called to serve a mission to the nearby American Indians. The Delaware Indians were receptive, and the chief requested that the missionaries return in the spring when “you shall read to us and teach us more concerning the Book of our fathers and the will of the Great Spirit.”
  • Prior to leaving on this mission, Oliver Cowdery signed a covenant to walk humbly before God and to do “this glorious work according as he shall direct me by the Holy Ghost.
  • Along the way, Oliver taught people in Kirtland, OH, which would later become a very important city to the Saints.
