I Will Be Valiant (Children’s #162)
Scripture
Discussion
- Ever since he was a boy, Joseph Smith faced critics—even enemies—as he tried to do God’s work. But it very difficult in late 1831 when Ezra Booth began publicly berating the Church, because Ezra was a former believer. Ezra had seen Joseph use God’s power to heal a woman. He had been invited to accompany Joseph on the first survey of the land of Zion in Missouri. But he had since lost his faith and, in an attempt to discredit the Prophet, published a series of letters in an Ohio newspaper. And it worked – a lot of people were against the Church.
- Have you ever heard someone talk bad about the Church or our beliefs?
- What does the Lord say in these verses about what we should do when it happens?
- We should alwways be kind, but we need to defend the Church by teaching the gospel.

Our Bishop (Children’s #135)
Scripture
Discussion
- When Newel K. Whitney was called to serve as the second bishop of the Church, his duties were a little different from those of today’s bishops.
- Many people paid their tithing with eggs, grains, milk, and other supplies. Those were stored in the Bishop’s Storehouse.
- What are some of the responsibilities of bishops today? Are any of these similar to the verses we read? For example, Bishops interview us for baptism and temple recommends which is “rendering an account.”
- You can look up Gospel Topics, “Bishop” for more of the bishop’s responsibilities.

I Want to Be a Missionary Now (Children’s #168)
Scripture
Discussion
- Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdom went on a mission to try to fix the problems that Ezra Booth caused.
- When they came home, the Lord told them to work on translating the Bible. This work was because even though the Bible was already in English, the people who had translated it had made mistakes. Joseph was fixing them.
- Even though they were doing this important work, He also still wanted them to keep preaching the gospel.

When I Am Baptized (Children’s #103)
Scripture
Discussion
- This revelation came because Joseph Smith had some questions about what was in the Bible.
- Many churches use a verse in the Bible to say that people should be baptized as babies, not when they are 8 years old or older.
- These verses tell us that Jesus Christ’s Atonement covers the mistakes of little children because they are still learning about right from wrong and need the chance to practice making good choices.
- We then baptize when people are 8 years old or older because they are old enough to understand the promise they make to keep the commandments.

- Last week, we read in section 68 that the Lord commanded the elders to “go ye into all the world” to preach the gospel.
- Some of them wanted more instuction on what they were supposed to do.
- What do we learn about effective missionary work in these verses?
- What blessings does the Lord promise missionaries? How does that apply to us now?
