Monday Devotional

Song

Family History—I Am Doing It (Children’s #94)

Scripture

Doctrine and Covenants 85:1–2

Discussion

  • The “history” described in verse 1 recorded the names of those who had “receive[d] inheritances legally” in Zion. These are the people who were participating in the Law of Consecration.
  • In addition to a list of names, we know a lot about these people because we know they followed the prophet and were trying to be obedient. Their descendants can learn more about their ancestors from this record.
  • We can all keep journals so our children and grandchildren can know about what life was like in our time. They can know our challenges and how we worked through problems and developed our testimonies. Why would this be a blessing for them?

Journal Entry

What things should I record in a journal?

Activity

Make feather pen quills to write in your journal.

Tuesday Devotional

Song

The Still Small Voice (Children’s #106)

Scripture

Doctrine and Covenants 85:6

Discussion

  • How does Joseph Smith describe the Holy Ghost in this verse?
  • How do we feel the Holy Ghost?
  • Why would something as important as the Holy Ghost be quiet?
  • How can I make sure I can always hear the Holy Ghost?

Journal Entry

When I have felt the still, small voice?

Activity

“Inviting the Spirit” (March 2012 Liahona and Friend)

Wednesday Devotional

Song

The Prophet Said to Plant a Garden (Children #237)

Scripture

Doctrine and Covenants 86:1-7

Discussion

  • Tares are weeds that look a lot like wheat. You can’t tell them apart until they have grown, so they have to grow together and then the tares are pulled out before they kill the wheat.
  • In this parable, each of us as members of the Church are wheat or tares. How do these verses apply to us? (Be a good example, don’t bring others down, don’t listen to others who make wrong choices.)

Journal Entry

How can I make sure to be a wheat instead of a tare?

Activity

Wheat kids craft or this simple Wheat and tares color-by-number

Thursday Devotional

Song

Follow the Prophet (Children’s #110) last verse especially

Scripture

D&C 87 – introduction and verses 1-4

Discussion

  • On this Christmas day, Joseph Smith was very concerned because the state South Caroline had gone against the government.
  • The Lord gave this revelation to Joseph that there would be a war soon.
  • Instead, a compromise was reached. Do you think some people thought Joseph Smith was wrong?
  • Then 30 years later, South Carolina rebelled again and the Civil War began.
  • Why do you think Heavenly Father gave this prophecy? What can we learn from it?

Journal Entry

What has the prophet prophecied about our time?

Activity

Follow the Prophet paths

Friday Devotional

Song

Where Love Is (Hymns #138)

Scripture

Doctrine and Covenants 87:5-8

Discussion

  • We learned yesterday that the Civil War was 30 years later than the revelation made it seem.
  • It’s more important that we know WHAT to do when something bad happens, rather than WHEN it will happen.
  • What do we learn from these verses?
  • Where are some holy places where we can be safe?
  • What does it mean to “be not moved” from these places?

Journal Entry

How can I make my home a holy place?
