Homemade Béchamel White Sauce Recipe with Cheese

This homemade béchamel white sauce recipe is perfect for going on macaroni and cheese, biscuits, or other main dishes requiring a cheese sauce.

Hey y’all, Tiffany here

I grew up as the oldest child of ten. My mother is a wonderful cook, and she made most of our meals from scratch in her efforts to live frugally with a lot of children.

One of the most versatile recipes she made was what we kids called “cheese sauce.” As an adult, I now know that she was making a béchamel white sauce that she added cheese to.

This cheese sauce was used to make homemade macaroni and cheese, as well as a topping for these delicious ham and cheese roll-ups. It also works really well making chicken enchiladas and chicken veggie lasagna.

There are so many different pasta dishes that require a white sauce or cheese sauce, so I thought I would share the recipe with all of you.

Béchamel White Sauce Recipe

The ingredients to make this white sauce are as follows:

  • 8 tbsp (1/2 cup) butter
  • 8 tbsp flour
  • 4 cups milk
  • 1/2 tbsp chicken boulian or flavor base
  • grated cheese (as much or little as you want; usually I do about a cup)

Melt butter on medium temperature stove. Mix in the flour to create a very thick paste.

Add milk and stir constantly (do not walk away at all or it will burn on the bottom).

Continue stirring and as the sauce thickens, add the boulion.

Keep stirring until all lumps are out and sauce begins to boil.

Continue stirring constantly while sauce boils for at least 1-2 minutes (be careful of splashes).

Then add as much grated cheese as desired.

Now you can use this white cheese sauce to make homemade macaroni and cheese, as well as a topping for these delicious ham and cheese roll-ups. Béchamel White Sauce also works really well making chicken enchiladas and chicken veggie lasagna.
