My grandma also makes the world’s best pancakes, and she always tops them with this delicious syrup. I had no idea this recipe for buttermilk syrup was a Magleby’s copycat recipe until I called her to ask for it. She sent me a picture of her recipe card in response.

We have this syrup every time I go home to visit my parents or grandparents. It’s turned into a family tradition to make pancakes with homemade syrup and for family reunions, and we even have it at Thanksgiving dinner alongside this homemade Fresh Cranberry Salad.

My grandparents have also always made maple syrup when they made pancakes for missionaries. They’ve served four missions together for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints!! They’ve gone to Canada, California, the Philippines, and Texas.

Magleby's Copycat Buttermilk Syrup

Magleby’s Copycat Buttermilk Syrup Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk*
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Begin by blending sugar, buttermilk, butter, and corn syrup in a sizable saucepan over medium heat.

Keep stirring consistently until the mixture reaches a gentle boil, making sure all the ingredients meld together seamlessly.

Directions

  1. Once the mixture reaches a boil, lower the heat to a gentle simmer and let it cook for approximately 5 minutes. During this time, stir occasionally to ensure the mixture doesn’t stick to the bottom of the saucepan and burn.
  2. Remove from heat immediately and gradually sprinkle in the baking soda, stirring gently to combine. Exercise caution as the baking soda may cause the mixture to fizz up.
  3. Return the saucepan to the stove top over low heat, allowing it to simmer for an extra 2 minutes. Stir the mixture constantly during this time to ensure it thickens to the desired consistency.
  4. After removing the saucepan from the heat, pour in the vanilla extract and stir vigorously to evenly distribute it throughout the syrup. Ensure every part of the syrup is infused with the delightful flavor of vanilla.
  5. Let the pancake syrup cool for a brief moment to reach the ideal temperature for serving. During this time, you’ll notice the syrup naturally thickening, enhancing its consistency and making it perfect for drizzling over your favorite breakfast delights.
