Hey y’all, Tiffany here. I got this recipe from my grandma. Yes, this is the same grandma who taught me how to make canned apple pie filling and how to not kill a General Authority with tuna casserole.
My grandma also makes the world’s best pancakes, and she always tops them with this delicious syrup. I actually had no idea this recipe for buttermilk syrup was a Magleby’s copycat recipe until I called her to ask for it.
We have this syrup every time I go home to visit my parents or grandparents. It’s turned into a family tradition to make pancakes for family reunions, and we even have it at Thanksgiving dinner alongside this homemade Fresh Cranberry Salad.
My grandparents have also always made this syrup when they make pancakes for missionaries. They’ve served four missions together for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints!! They’e gone to Canada, California, Philippines, and Texas.

Magleby’s Copycat Buttermilk Syrup Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 cup butter
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup buttermilk*
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp vanilla
You can make your own buttermilk by putting 1/2 Tbsp of lemon juice or vinegar into 1/2 cup of milk and letting it sit for 5-10 minutes. You could also do 1/4 cup milk and 1/4 cup plain yogurt instead.
Directions
Boil the butter, sugar, and buttermilk for 1 minute
Take off the stove and add the soda. Stir, and then add the vanilla.
Warning: it foams up a lot when you add the baking soda, so make sure to use a bigger pot than you think you’ll need!
Once finished, allow to cool slightly before drizzling onto The World’s Best Pancakes (or any other pancake or waffle recipe that you prefer).
