Starting Easter traditions with Easter cookies in my family

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been making these sour cream Easter sugar cookies with my mom.  I continued doing that as an adult in college.  My mom even mailed some to me both Christmases that I was a missionary in Puerto Rico!

When Phillip and I were first married and his family came out for our December wedding, my mother-in-law tried these Easter cookies and fell in love. After they went home, she emailed me to ask for the recipe so she could make them with my new brother-and sister-in-law.  They’ve now become a family Easter tradition in her household, too!

Everyone I’ve ever introduced to these cookies has told me that they taste so much better than traditional sugar cookies.

Try them for yourself and see!The best part about these sour cream Easter sugar cookies is they work for any holiday, not just Christmas! You just need the right cookie cutters! These are the cookie cutters I personally use if you’re interested.

Easter sugar cookies have been around longer than you think!

Easter egg sugar cookies are believed to have originated in Europe during the Middle Ages. The first cookies were made with basic ingredients such as sugar, butter, and flour. They were often shaped into simple shapes like circles and hearts and were often served during holidays and celebrations.

As cookies spread throughout Europe, bakers began to experiment with new ingredients and flavorings. One of these ingredients was sour cream, which is believed to have been added to sugar cookies in Central Europe. Sour cream added a tangy flavor to the cookies and made them more tender.

Sour cream sugar cookies with cream cheese frosting became popular in the United States during the 19th century. The recipe was often passed down from generation to generation and was a favorite among families during holidays and special occasions. It brings me no surprise how it has ended up becoming a tradition in my home too.

Easter sugar cookies are also a wonderful way to get creative. With a variety of cookie cutters, frosting colors, and decorative toppings, the possibilities are endless. You can make bunnies, eggs, flowers, and more – the only limit is your imagination!

But enough talk – let’s get to the recipe! Here’s how to make some of the best Easter egg sugar cookies around. They pair perfectly with this delicious Easter Punch for Kids.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 5 cups flour
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp. baking soda

Ingredients to cream together

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup butter
  • 2 eggs

Add in:

  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 tsp. vanilla

Mix together and then slowly stir in:

  • 5 cups flour
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp. baking soda

Directions

First things first, gather up your ingredients. You’ll need sugar, butter, eggs, sour cream, vanilla extract, flour, salt, baking soda, cream cheese, milk, and powdered sugar. You probably have most of these things in your pantry already, so don’t panic too much about having to race to the grocery store.

Now, it’s time to get baking. Cream together the sugar, butter, and eggs, then add in the sour cream and vanilla extract. In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, salt, and baking soda. Slowly stir the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until it forms a dough. Be careful not to over-beat! Roll out on a floured surface to 3/4″.  Cut into circles or use cookie cutters to cut these sour cream sugar cookies with cream cheese frosting into whichever shapes you’d like!

Now comes the fun part – rolling out the dough and cutting it into fun shapes! Be careful not to over-beat! Roll out on a floured surface to 3/4″. Bunnies, eggs, flowers – the possibilities are endless. Bake at 425* for 5 minutes.

Allow to cool completely before frosting. While you’re waiting for them to bake and cool, you can have fun with these frozen fizzy Easter eggs or you can make a Pop Up Easter Card.

And if you’re feeling really adventurous, you can even try your hand at piping designs onto the cookies with the cream cheese frosting. Just make sure to let the cookies cool completely before frosting them, or you’ll end up with a melty mess.

You can’t enjoy these sour cream sugar cookies without topping them with cream cheese frosting! It’s super easy to dye for each occasion.

Ingredients

  • 1 cube (1/2 cup) butter
  • 8 oz softened cream cheese
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • up to 5 cups powdered sugar

Directions

Beat together:

  • 1 cube (1/2 cup) butter
  • 1 pack (8 oz) softened cream cheese

Add:

  • 1 tsp vanilla

Alternate adding these items while beating:

  • 1/4 total cup milk
  • Up to 5 cups of powdered sugar

Directions

Speaking of frosting, let’s talk about that cream cheese frosting. Beat together the butter and cream cheese until it’s nice and creamy, then add in the vanilla extract. Alternate adding in the powdered sugar and milk until you get the desired consistency so it doesn’t clump up. Keep on beating until smooth and at the desired texture.

“If the mix is too runny, just add a bit of powdered sugar.  If it is too thick, and a tiny bit of milk.”

And if you’re feeling fancy, go ahead and dye the frosting whatever color you want!

Once you’ve frosted your cookies to your heart’s content, and they are at a nice room temperature, it’s time to dig in! Trust me, one bite of these tangy, sweet cookies and you’ll be hooked. And the best part? You can enjoy them all year round, not just during the holidays. Whip up a batch for a birthday party, a girls’ night in, or just because you feel like it.

Get your apron on, preheat your oven, and let’s bake some Easter egg cookies! And if you’re feeling generous, go ahead and share them with your friends and family. Because let’s be real, nothing says “I love you” quite like a homemade cookie.
