Celebrate Valentine’s Day with these Sour Cream Valentine’s Day sugar cookies with cream cheese frosting! As the perfect Valentine’s day treat, cut them into hearts or other romantic shapes, then top with a cream cheese frosting dyed pink and red.

Hey y’all, Tiffany here.

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been making these sour cream sugar cookies with my mom. I continued doing that as an adult in college. My mom even mailed some to me both Christmases that I was a missionary in Puerto Rico!

When Phillip and I were first married and his family came out for our December wedding, my mother-in-law tried these cookies and fell in love. After they went home, she emailed me to ask for the recipe so she could make them with my new brother-and sister-in-law. They’ve now become a family tradition in her household, too!

Everyone I’ve ever introduced to these cookies has told me that they taste so much better than traditional sugar cookies – and they’re right. Try them for yourself and see!

The best part about these sour cream sugar cookies is they work for any holiday, not just Christmas! You just need the right cookie cutters!

Prepare the Dough:

In a large bowl, start by creaming together 2 cups of sugar, 1 cup of butter (softened), and 2 eggs using a hand mixer or stand mixer. Ensure a smooth and fluffy texture is achieved.

Enhance the Flavor:

Add in 1 cup of sour cream and 1 tsp. of vanilla extract. Mix these ingredients thoroughly to infuse that delightful flavor into your Valentine’s Day sugar cookies.

Combine the Dry Ingredients:

In a separate bowl, whisk together 5 cups of flour, 3/4 tsp of salt, and 2 tsp of baking soda. Gradually incorporate these dry ingredients into the wet mixture, being cautious not to over-beat. The resulting dough should be well-mixed and perfectly textured.

Roll Out the Dough:

Flour your work surface and roll out the sugar cookie dough to a thickness of 3/4″. Utilize a rolling pin to roll dough to achieve an even consistency. This step is crucial for creating the perfect base for your delicious sugar cookies.

Cut into Shapes:

Use heart-shaped cookie cutters or any desired shapes to cut out the dough. Create super cute and gorgeous cookies using heart-shaped cookie cutters that are perfect for Valentine’s Day. The love-themed shapes will add an extra touch to your cookies.

Baking Process:

Place the cut-out cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake them until lightly browned, ensuring a soft and chewy texture. Keep a close eye on the baking process to achieve the perfect outcome.

While it’s baking, you can do this Valentine’s Day themed yoga with your kids – or just by yourself – as a fun way to pass the time.

  • up to 5 cups powdered sugar

Directions for Creating the Perfect Cream Cheese Frosting

Begin the Creaming Process:

In a mixing bowl, start by beating together 1 cube (1/2 cup) of butter and 1 pack (8 oz) of softened cream cheese. This dynamic duo forms the rich and creamy base for our luscious cream cheese frosting.

Infuse Flavor Elegantly:

Add a touch of indulgence with 1 tsp of vanilla extract. This aromatic addition improves the flavor of cream butter, making your cream cheese frosting the ideal companion for the delicious sugar cookies you’re about to create.

Perfect Harmony of Texture:

Achieve the perfect texture of royal icing by alternately adding 1/4 total cup of milk and up to 5 cups of powdered sugar. The key here is to alternate between these ingredients while beating, preventing any undesirable clumps in your frosting.

Smooth Consistency is Key:

Continue beating until the mixture reaches a smooth and desirable texture. Should you find the frosting a bit runny, introduce a bit more powdered sugar. If it leans towards thickness, a tiny bit of milk can be added to attain the perfect consistency.

Beautifully Versatile:

This cream cheese frosting is not just a companion; it’s a versatile masterpiece. Ideal for any occasion, but especially fitting for Valentine’s Day sugar cookies, it adds a delightful, velvety touch to your baking endeavors.

Nutritional Elegance:

Embrace the nutrition side of this delectable frosting. With carefully balanced ingredients like softened butter and cream cheese, indulge guilt-free in this luxurious treat. The creaminess adds to the overall satisfaction of your delightful sugar cookies.

The Finishing Touch:

Once your cream cheese frosting achieves the perfect consistency, it’s ready to decorate your sugar cookies. Use an offset spatula or butter knife to generously spread this luscious icing creation on your heart-shaped, super cute cookies.

Artistry with Piping:

For an extra touch of artistry, consider using a piping bag to create intricate designs on your cookies. The cream cheese frosting, coupled with your creative flair, will result in gorgeous cookies that not only taste divine but are visually captivating.

Store with Care:

After your cookies are beautifully adorned, store them in an airtight container. The cream cheese frosting retains its freshness, ensuring that every bite of bake cookies maintains the perfect balance of sweetness and creaminess.
