As you may already know, in our home we do our best to make Christmas about giving to others and celebrating the birth of the Savior of the world. We don’t do gifts from Santa, but we enjoy pretending to be Santa with our children.
Ever since I (Tiffany) was a kid, I’ve been making these sour cream sugar cookies with my mom. I continued doing that as an adult in college. My mom even mailed some to me both Christmases that I was a missionary in Puerto Rico!
When Phillip and i were first married and his family came out for our December wedding, my mother-in-law tried these cookies and fell in love. After they went home, she emailed me to ask for the recipe so she could make them with my new brother-and sister-in-law. They’ve now become a family tradition in her household, too!
She sent me these pictures afterwards. Aren’t they cute?
Everyone I’ve ever introduced to these cookies has told me that they taste so much better than traditional sugar cookies – and they’re right. Try them for yourself and see!
Sour Cream Sugar Cookies
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 cup butter
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 tsp. vanilla
Mix together and then slowly stir in:
- 5 cups flour
- 3/4 tsp salt
- 2 tsp. baking soda
Be careful not to over-beat! Roll out on a floured surface to 3/4″. Cut into circles or use cookie cutters to cut whichever shapes you’d like!
Bake at 425* for 5 minutes. Allow to cool completely before frosting.
Cream Cheese Frosting
- 1 cube (1/2 cup) butter
- 1 pack (8 oz) softened cream cheese
- 1 tsp vanilla
Alternate adding these items while beating:
- 1/4 total cup milk
- Up to 5 cups of powdered sugar
You need to alternate adding sugar and milk so it doesn’t clump! Keep on beating until smooth and at the desired texture. If mix is too runny, just add a bit of powdered sugar. If it is too thick, and a tiny bit of milk.
Tip: this is my favorite frosting recipe for cinnamon rolls!
